Coupe Malachite · £310 · Thrown coupe · white clay, copper and manganese engobe, transparent enamel, pigments · 28.5 × 11.5 cm · one made

A low open bowl thrown on the wheel and set on a hand-built foot, with copper and manganese worked into the crackle of the glaze until the surface earns its mineral name. Wide enough to hold the centre of a table, shallow enough to leave empty.

Joining a hand-rolled foot to a thrown bowl takes exact balance, and the piece then rests for three days out of any draught so the foot does not crack as the clay shrinks. The engobe shifts between green and bronze. Dark pigment worked into the fine cracks turns them into a pattern of their own.

Details: white clay from the Iberian Peninsula, copper and manganese engobe, transparent enamel, black and brown pigments · wheel-thrown, hand-built foot, triple-fired · Salé, Morocco · 28.5 × 28.5 × 11.5 cm · 1.2 kg · one of one · decorative; not for food or liquids; dust with a soft dry cloth

Made in a studio in Salé, on Morocco's Atlantic coast, by a ceramicist who came to the craft through his father's connection to the old Oulja pottery market, which no longer exists.
