Vessel Tide · £195 · Slip-cast vessel · white clay, turquoise and cobalt enamel · 28 × 29 cm · one made

Cast in a plaster mould carved by hand, finished, biscuit-fired, then sprayed in turquoise and cobalt and fired again, the colour building as a fine gradient across the surface.

The original was carved from raw plaster over many days, its soft, structured lines suggesting a torso, and the small ring handle is set by hand after casting. Three days of slow, sheltered drying keep the clay from straining as it contracts. The final high firing brings up the blue and the crackle together.

Made in a studio in Salé, on Morocco's Atlantic coast, by a ceramicist who came to the craft through his father's connection to the old Oulja pottery market, which no longer exists.
