Amphora Jade · £520 · Hand-coiled amphora · white clay, engobes, lead-free enamel, mineral oxides · 23 × 31 cm · one made
The amphora is the oldest vessel form in the Mediterranean and this one is built the oldest way, coil laid on coil, handles drawn and set by hand. It dries slowly and is fired three times at 1030 degrees, the green arriving in layers rather than in a single glaze, which is why it holds light differently at the shoulder than at the foot.
The coils are built from liquid white clay from the Iberian Peninsula, and all four handles are shaped and joined by hand. The piece then rests in a closed cupboard for at least five days, the only way to keep the handles from cracking as it dries. Oxides carry the colour from near black at the foot to bright jade at the shoulder.

Made in a studio in Salé, on Morocco's Atlantic coast, by a ceramicist who came to the craft through his father's connection to the old Oulja pottery market, which no longer exists.
