Vessel Ash & Celadon · £345 · Thrown and hand-built vessel · white clay, blue engobe, transparent enamel, cobalt oxide · 19 × 17.5 cm · one made

Thrown on the wheel, then set on slab feet built by hand, dried for three days and fired three times, each firing adding a layer: blue engobe, then enamel, then cobalt. Grey meets green where the layers thin over the curve.

The three feet are rolled from a slab and joined to the thrown body, so the vessel lifts away from whatever it stands on. Those three days of drying happen out of any draught, which stops fine cracks forming where the feet meet the body. The cobalt gathers in a dense crackle across the top, clouded turquoise at the rim settling into a calmer pale blue at the base.

Details: white clay from the Iberian Peninsula, blue engobe, transparent enamel, cobalt oxide · wheel-thrown, hand-built feet, triple-fired · Salé, Morocco · 19 × 19 × 17.5 cm · 1.3 kg · one of one · decorative; not for food or liquids; dust with a soft dry cloth

Made in a studio in Salé, on Morocco's Atlantic coast, by a ceramicist who came to the craft through his father's connection to the old Oulja pottery market, which no longer exists.
