Passage · £650 · Flatweave and hand-knotted runner · natural sheep wool, cotton warp · 239 × 73 cm · one made
Passage comes from Goulmima, in the pre-Saharan southeast, and holds two techniques at once: a flat ground with passages of knotted pile raised above it, so the pattern moves as the light moves. Runners like it were woven for the long narrow rooms of village houses, which is the job it will do in a hallway.
The ivory is the colour of the fleece itself, and no dye has touched it. The raised diamond lattice is one of the oldest motifs in Amazigh weaving, a talisman for protection and fertility, and none of it was drawn on paper first. It was made with a spindle, a rug beater and studded boards, tools that have not changed in generations.
