Vessel Stratum · £450 · Slip-cast vessel · white clay, iron oxide engobe, manganese, transparent enamel · 25 × 30 cm · one made

Stratum is named for its banding. The form is cast in a plaster mould the ceramicist carved himself, finished by hand, coated in iron oxide and manganese and fired three times, with a last pass of manganese laid down across the surface like sediment against rock.

The original was carved by hand from a block of raw plaster over several days, and the mould was taken from that sculpture. Each cast is reworked by hand to bring back the character of the original. The form echoes eroded sandstone, and the surface reads like a cross-section of earth in ochre and stone grey.

Details: white clay from the Iberian Peninsula, iron oxide engobe, manganese, transparent enamel · slip-cast in a hand-sculpted mould, triple-fired · Salé, Morocco · 19 × 25 × 30 cm · 2.3 kg · one of one · decorative; not for food or liquids; dust with a soft dry cloth

Made in a studio in Salé, on Morocco's Atlantic coast, by a ceramicist who came to the craft through his father's connection to the old Oulja pottery market, which no longer exists.
