Verse was woven in Fes in Hanbl, a dense flatweave made for rooms that take heavy use. Undyed fleece from Ait Ouelmes is worked against henna-dyed yarn on a cotton warp, more than seven kilograms of wool across three metres. Flat enough for a dining table to sit level on it, heavy enough to stay where it is put.

The terracotta comes entirely from the henna. The symbols belong to the Amazigh visual language: diamonds for protection and fertility, crosses for balance, chevrons for direction, combs for barley and wheat, a wish for abundance. Read band by band, the upper half is dense with meaning and the lower half opens into quiet. With no pile to soften an uneven line, every angle the weaver set from memory had to hold.
